  Still life is where photography slows down. There is no decisive moment to catch, only decisions to make: where the light falls, how deep a shadow should be, whether a reflection helps the object or distracts from it.

  Krzysztof Czernecki finds that discipline deeply satisfying, and it underpins everything else he does.

  His still life work is built around light.

  He shapes it gradually, one source and one modifier at a time, with an attention to detail that borders on the obsessive, because in a simple composition there is nowhere for imprecision to hide.

  Glass, metal and liquid are unforgiving subjects; they show every choice the photographer makes. Getting them right in camera, and then finishing each image with immaculate retouching, is what allows a product to look at once true to itself and better than life.
